String Quartet No. 13 was written in Hampton, Virginia during December 2023-January 2024 in memoriam of Tracy Marie Stokes-Clark (1958-2023).
All titles of movements reflect the character of the composed music. Movements two and four suggest images of dance and rural life respectively, while a slower third movement suggests argumentative images. The initial and concluding movements enclose these image articulations; and, as the initial and latter two movements are to be performed attacca, a fast-slow-fast performance profile is provided for this quartet as a whole.
Finally, the work expresses a postmodern compositional framework, with architectonic procedures of form being expressed in a non-doctrinaire manner.
