Dominion Fragments for mezzo-soprano, clarinet, and piano (1997)

The Dominion Fragments was composed during the fall and winter of 1996-1997 in Hampton, Virginia for the Dominion Trio (Fay Putnam, mezzo-soprano; F. Gerald Errante, clarinet; Ruth Winters, piano).  The work is the sequel to my Three Psalm Fragments for Soprano and Bb Clarinet, and consists of eleven movements performed attacca.

The range of the Mezzo-Soprano part is from g to g2.

Duration of movements:

I. Prelude: ca. 1′ (clarinet, piano)

II. Dominion 1: ca. 30″ (mezzo-soprano, clarinet, piano)

Thou madest him to have dominion over the works of thy hands; thou hast put all things under his feet: All sheep and oxen, yea, and the beasts of the field; The fowl of the air, and the fish of the sea, and whatsoever passeth through the paths of the seas. (Psalm 8:6-8)

III. Interlude 1: ca. 28″ (piano)

IV. Dominion 2: ca. 47″ (mezzo-soprano, clarinet)

Who can understand his errors? cleanse thou me from secret faults. (Psalm 19:12)

V. Interlude 2: ca. 1′ 45″ (clarinet)

VI. Dominion 3: ca. 3′ 45″ (mezzo-soprano, piano)

Keep back thy servant also from presumptuous sins; let them not have dominion over me: then shall I be upright, and I shall be innocent from the great transgression. (Psalms 19:13)

VII. Interlude 3: ca. 1′ 30″ (piano)

VIII. Dominion 4: ca. 40″ (mezzo-soprano, clarinet)

Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O LORD, my strength, and my redeemer. (Psalm 19:14)

IX. Interlude 4: ca. 20″ (clarinet)

X. Dominion 5: ca. 1′ (mezzo-soprano, clarinet, piano)

Bless the LORD, all his works in all places of his dominion: bless the LORD, O my soul. (Psalm 103:22)

XI. Postlude: ca. 45″ (clarinet, piano)
