The Values and Proposals No. 4 was composed during August/September 2018 for Sandra Richards, Rena Long, Stephanie Sanders, and Elizabeth (“Betsy”) Foushee–the double reed (oboe, english horn, bassoon) performers in the Symphonicity Orchestra of Virginia Beach, Virginia.
Works in the Values and Proposals series are experimental with respect to design and harmonic content. Each work establishes and opening series of gestures (the Proposals), and the implications of these gestures are articulated improvisationally in several compositional directions (the Values). As a result, the works contain much cyclical reference, and are replete with a variety of tense and calm expressions of tonal relations.
The two movements of this particular work are fashioned so that an opening “Episode” of divergent musical material is concluded by an “Epilogue” which provided reflective commentary on the materials of the work as a whole. The work is to be performed attacca.
